This $8.5 billion dollar program called O’Hare 21 will improve and expand all existing O’Hare terminals and facilities over the next 10 years. Terminal 5, upon completion will be modernized and address the growing demands of O’Hare as one of the busiest airports in the world.

For the Terminal 5 expansion, Walsh Construction began the project in March 2019 by building the new $64 million aircraft parking aprons that are crucial for the terminal extension and modernization program. The expansion will be completed in two major phases by the end of 2020. The first step will see an expansion of the terminal’s footprint to create a new space between Gates M7 and M12 and beyond Gate M21. Following this work, the existing space will be reconfigured for the additions of checkpoint lanes and baggage claim areas. Other enhancements will include a redesign of the existing immigration and customs facility and will provide flexible use capability for domestic and international flights.
