This project consisted of building a reservoir along Touhy Avenue west of Mount Prospect Road near O’Hare. The intent of the reservoir was to lower the 100-year flood plain levels at the airport. The reservoir is about 50.0 feet deep at the lowest end. A Spillway was constructed along the creek to accommodate the overflow. The deep end of the reservoir is tied into the existing reservoir to the north of the property. The material excavated from the reservoir area was stockpiled either at the site or at the sound berm location south of the airport. The material that was acceptable for re-use as a liner material was stockpiled at the site and the other material was shipped out to the sound berm location.
INTERRA performed soil investigation to determine in situ layers of acceptable soil for construction of the liner for the reservoir. INTERRA provided elaborate laboratory testing to identify suitable soils. We provided estimates on quantity of harvestable clay for liner use. For soils, onsite inspection services were provided to identify suitable soils for re-use as a liner material for the reservoir. Additionally, INTERRA verified densities in the field for compliance. For concrete, field testing was conducted as well as batch plant inspection. Also performed was the verification of reinforcing steel for the spillway.
